Speakeasy has a brand new feature! You can now submit your work online with a simple entry system. You can also view other people's work before it is published, and get a sense of the issue beforehand. This should allow us to crank out our 'zine more quickly and fairly than ever before. Thanks to David for creating the entire thing from scratch!

What're you waiting for? SUBMIT YOUR WORK!

  Wanna get published?
Read and scroll, and you shall know.

I. What is this Speakeasy thing all about?

1. It’s a club that will create The Speakeasy zine, which will have student’s writings, drawings, artwork, etc. (Below are details on types of submissions accepted and where to submit work.)

2. If all goes well the zine will be bi-monthly.

3. You don’t have to be in the club to submit work.

4. You don’t have to submit work to be in the club.

II. Wait. What the hell is a zine?

zine also 'zine (z n)
n.

An inexpensively produced, self-published, underground publication:

[Short for magazine.]
(Definition according to dictionary.com.)

III. What kind of work can you submit to this zine?

1. There aren’t many limitations on what kind of work to submit. But, one thing, this is a catholic school, so anything submitted must be appropriate, or it won’t get published. (I.E. no drawing of burning crosses, or the KKK, sorry). (The process of determining what gets published is explained below.)

2. It has to be able to be printed on paper. (i.e. no road kill, but a nice picture of road kill is ok), no abstract 3D objects, or anything like that. So, it has to be able to be printed on paper,ok?

3. We are looking to publish...

Writings, which entail:

Short stories, short plays, poems (not too cheesy though), fim scripts/ideas, jokes (good ones), movie/book/music reviews, local band advertisements and reviews , political opinions, rants and raves about whatever, thoughts, journals, discoveries, bla bla, basically anything written.

Drawings/art like stuff, which entail:

Sketches, doodles, paintings, cartoons, comics, graphic designs, photography, photos of homemade baskets (they better be rad), photos of stained glass windows (again, only rad), (be sure to submit only copies of work, no originals), bla bla, and again, basically anything that can be printed on paper.

IV. Where else can I submit the work I want published?

1. There are 3 different options for submitting your work:

I. In the English Village Mail Room, on the 3rd floor of UHall, in a tray titles "The SPEAKEASY."

II. In 1st floor of Malone, room 101, in a box titled "THE SPEAKEASY: SUBMISSIONS."

III. And lastly, you can email your work to onesickclub@yahoo.com.

2. We prefer you submit your work via email because its easier for us to print out, but the drop-off locations will work just the same.

V. Who determines what gets published?

1. Five members of the club (selected anonymously before each issues production) will decide what will be published for the upcoming issue, but there is a chance that you will get published in the later issues, if there are too many submissions.

2. All submissions will be viewed by the selected five members, who will then all openly agree on what will be published for the upcoming issue.

VI. What about the clubs staff? Who are they and how will they be selected?

1. The club’s staff will be a group of about 8-15 people that will meet weekly, at a date TBA.

2. Staff positions within the club are not permanently defined. Everyone will work together but some will have arranged tasks with deadlines.

3. Anyone interested can sign up for the designated positions (look below) (but will not be held to just that) and will be selected by the prez within a few days of these meetings.

4. The tentative titles/jobs for the Staff will be:

finance/ budget/ money

website design/ tech person

email collecting/ public relations

zine layout/ design

typers/ printers/editors

VII. Are there any other things we gotta know?

This whole zine thing can only be possible with the contributed effort of everyone…and I am talking about money. If you submit work, you don’t have to pay anything, but donations will not be turned down. Now, if you are a part of the staff, then money donations are not required but will definatley help things move faster.

Eventually, if this zine and club prove successful, the school will give us money and maybe even pay for everything, that’s if things work out well.

That’s it. Anything else? Contact us.
